  14.      Supercoast requires at least a 286 computer running Microsoft
  15. Windows (TM) version 3.1.  It will not run very well on a 286 or
  16. slow 386, however.  Supercoast achieves it's best performance when
  17. a numeric processor is present.  (486's all have built in numeric
  18. processors except the SX models, and 387's installed with 386's are
  19. numeric processors).

  23. Installation:
  24. =============

  26.      If you have a numeric processor (a 287, 387, or 486 non-sx),
  27. copy the included file "scoast87.scr" to the windows directory
  28. (usually c:\windows).  If you do NOT have a numeric processor, copy
  29. the file "scoast.scr" to the windows directory.  Once you have
  30. copied the proper file, load the control panel in windows (usually
  31. located in the Main group).  Double-click the desktop icon and
  32. choose "Roller Coaster" from the screen saver choices.

  36. About the Program:

  39.      Supercoast is a screen saver for Microsoft Windows (TM) version
  40. 3.1.  Screen savers are designed to protect your computer monitor
  41. from burn in by not allowing a constant pattern to remain on the
  42. screen.  Supercoast accomplishes this by displaying different line
  43. drawings quickly as the roller coaster moves around the track.  The
  44. result is a three dimensional eye-view as if your were riding a
  45. roller coaster.  Additionally, Supercoast moves the flat image
  46. slowly back and forth over a distance of 60 pixels to prevent
  47. constant vertical lines from existing.  For maximal screen-saving
  48. properties, set the track thickness to 0 (see below).

  52. Setup Option:
  53. =============
  54.  
  55.      Supercoast has many options that can be set by using the setup
  56. dialog.  To do this, select desktop from the windows control panel,
  57. and select the Roller Coaster screen saver.  Then click on the
  58. 'setup' pushbutton.  The setup dialog will now appear and options
  59. can be set.  Explanations of these options follow:

  64. A.  Time Interval:  
  65. ------------------
  66.     
  67.      The time interval is an integer number that can be specified by
  68. the user. This value is the number of milliseconds to display a
  69. frame of the motion until a new frame is redrawn.  The higher the
  70. number is, the slower the roller coaster will go.  This can be
  71. useful to even out the performance of the coaster on a slower
  72. machine, or to slow down the amount of cpu time that the coaster
  73. takes up (to improve performance of other programs running in the
  74. background)

  76. B.  Use Intermediate Bitmap:
  77. ----------------------------

  79.      As a default, this is not selected.  Normally, all of the
  80. 'drawing' of the roller coaster is done as you watch.  If you have
  81. the track thickness set high, and/or other options, this may create
  82. an annoying flicker on the screen.  With the intermediate bitmap
  83. option set, all drawing is done in memory, and then the final image
  84. is sent to the graphics hardware. This eliminates much of the
  85. flicker, but will probably slow down the motion of the roller
  86. coaster, especially if a high-color graphics mode is used.  Whether
  87. or not this is a good option for you to set depends on what kind of
  88. graphics hardware you have, which graphics mode you use, and what
  89. other options you use.  Try both ways and pick the one that works
  90. best.

  92. C.  Track Thickness:
  93. --------------------

  95.      The track thickness option allows you to select the diameter of
  96. the track pipes.  Generally, As the thickness of the pipes
  97. increases,  the performance of the roller coaster slows.  A value
  98. of 0 creates only line drawings and eliminates all computation of
  99. thickness, and is therefore the fastest option.

  101. D.  Track Color:
  102. ----------------

  104.      The track color options allow the user to combine values of
  105. red, green, and blue to arrive at the desired color.  Values should
  106. be in the range of 0-255.  If you are not in a full color graphics
  107. mode,  Windows will choose an available color which most closely
  108. represents the values you have chosen.

  111. E.   Initial Velocity:
  112. ----------------------

  114.      This specifies the velocity of the roller coaster at the
  115. beginning (top) of the track. The greater this number, the faster
  116. the roller coaster will go.

  118. F.   Gravity:
  119. -------------

  121.      This value specifies the gravity constant which influences the 
  122. roller coaster's speed as it moves on inclined track.

  124. G.   Supports:
  125. --------------

  127.      This specifies whether the ground supports are to be drawn.

  129. H.   Flags:
  130. -----------
  131.  
  132.      This specifies whether flags are to be drawn on the sides of
  133. the track.

  140.      Supercoast is a shareware program.  This means that the
  141. unregistered version is freely distributed, but users are required
  142. to purchase a registered version to continue using the program.  As
  143. stated in the setup dialog, to order, send a $10 check or money
  144. order payable to Brian Skrenta to the following address:

  150.      For this registration fee, you will receive the latest version
  151. of Supercoast.  This version will include options for password
  152. protection, and different track designs.  It will also enable you
  153. to make your own roller coaster designs for use by Supercoast. 
  154. This registration fee will help the author (Brian Skrenta) to make
  155. improvements on Supercoast and develop other shareware programs.

  159. Distribution:

  162.      The unregistered version of Supercoast may be freely
  163. distributed by anyone provided that the following conditions are
  164. met:
  165.  
  166. 1)  None of the program or files are modified in any way.
  167.  
  168. 2)  The files scoast.scr, scoast87.scr, and scoast.txt must all be 
  169. included in the distribution.  Feel free to use any      
  170. archive/compression format for these files, but it's probably
  171. easiest just to use the original zip file.

  173. 3)  Do not charge more than $5 for the media that the program is
  174. sold on.

  182. registered owner and is not to be distributed under any
